Ishinabe Kuzumochi Store
石鍋商店
Located in Kishimachi, Kita Ward, the historic Ishinabe Kuzumochi Store serves chewy fermented-wheat kuzumochi, fragrant agar anmitsu, and mame kanten for dine-in or takeaway.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When tender slices of white kuzumochi are thoroughly coated in nutty roasted soy powder and silky dark brown-sugar syrup, each bite offers a springy chew paired with a gentle, fermented nuance. Operating in Kishimachi, Kita Ward, Ishinabe Kuzumochi Store has preserved traditional confection-making since its founding in the 20th year of the Meiji era. Unlike the translucent, arrowroot-derived kuzu-mochi typical of western Japan, the shop crafts the classic Kanto variety using fermented wheat starch, yielding a firm, satisfying texture accented by clean, unvarnished sweetness.
Alongside kuzumochi, the shop is known for traditional desserts made with cubed agar jelly, retaining the clean scent of tengusa seaweed. Offerings can be tailored to the day's mood, including anmitsu balancing smooth strained red-bean paste with fresh fruit, cream anmitsu topped with ice cream, or mame kanten, which pairs the brisk clarity of agar with salted red peas and brown-sugar syrup. Each bowl remains rustic yet distinctly defined by its ingredients, delivering balanced sweetness without feeling heavy.
Seating inside allows visitors to unwind in a quiet, unhurried atmosphere, enjoying freshly assembled sweets alongside chilled barley tea. The takeaway counter is stocked with boxes of kuzumochi as well as bamboo-sheath-wrapped chestnut yokan, sake steamed buns, and sekihan (steamed red-bean rice), making it a neighbourhood favourite for gifts. Because many fresh confections have a brief shelf life, arriving earlier in the day is recommended if you have specific items in mind.
